Moore Than Just A Club

Collins or Tomkins who would you choose?

In his first game back at the Boleyn Ground, James Collins looked invincible against Villa. He was commanding at the back, winning every aerial challenge and breaking up most threats on the ground. So much so, he was my Man of the Match.

Next up was the trip to Swansea where we all thought we would get something out of the game. What we did not count on was Collins’ inept performance where he gifted the second goal to Misu when his back pass to Jussi fell well short. This sealed our fate in this game and since then, he seems to have lost confidence and his performances have been shaky to say least.

Big Sam has stayed loyal to Collins despite his costly mistake and loss of form. Is he doing this to justify signing him or is he doing it because he believes he is a better central defender than James Tomkins? My guess is it is the former which could possibly turn out to be a misguided philosophy.

When a player suffers a loss of form in the way Collins has, is it wise to continue playing him at all costs and hope his team mates can rally round and cover for him until he turns the corner? Or, as I believe it should be, Collins should be put on the bench for a game or two in order to give James Tomkins a chance the prove himself in the Premier League? Remember, Tomkins was one of our most consistent players last season.

In my opinion if handled right, Tomkins will be the future England central midfielder especially with the demise of John Terry.
