Where Are They Now? Sebastian Lletget

One that got away for many Hammers fans, Sebastian Lletget was one of a rare few Americans to wear the Claret & Blue but never really ever broke into the first-team the way he was tipped to do so.

But, why was this? In which direction did the bright young midfielder turn after leaving East London? And, more importantly, where is he now?

Sebastian Lletget

Born in San Francisco in 1992, the USA man always wanted to become a Professional Football in a place where Sports such as American Football and Baseball were the norm.

However, this did little to halt his prospective Career in Football as he was scouted whilst figuring for Sporting Santa Clara in 2009 by US-based West Ham United Staff.

Lletget made the decision to move to England that very same year and join up with the Academy at Chadwell Heath, instantly fitting in for the U18s, later working with fellow Countryman and Manager Steve Potts.

As he progressed through the various Youth teams, he caught the eye of first-team Boss Sam Allardyce, who amongst others, thought it best that he sign a contract extension.

By this stage, he was featuring more for the U21 side and pushing his way into first-team Matchday Squads, as seen frequently during the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 campaigns.

His long-awaited debut under Allardyce, much like many other young talents, would be his only appearance for the Senior team and it came in the infamous away FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest.

With a weakened team, the Hammers went down 5-0 and were knocked out of the 2013/2014 version of Football’s oldest Competition.

Despite making some appearances in pre-season, Lletget sparsely featured the season after and was duly released from the club in summer 2015 just before the sacking of Allardyce.

But, this wasn’t the end of the road for him, with the central midfielder moving back to his homeland and quickly being snapped up by one of the most recognisable outfits in the MLS, LA Galaxy.

Here, he settled in well and before he knew it was playing Senior Football after a spell in the B team, even scoring in four consecutive matches in his first few months.

Lletget’s exploits during the following campaigns, becoming a regular with the Galaxy in the League, earned him a call-up to the USA National Team under Bruce Arena early this year (2017).

A short while later, he netted his first International goal against Honduras while continuing to flourish at club level, unfortunately, he picked up a Foot injury whilst on International duty and has been out of action ever since.

Nowadays, the former Hammer is something of a major celebrity in Los Angeles, not only for his talent on the field, but also for his relationship with American Pop sensation Becky G which continues to this day.

Sebastian Lletget may not have been able to display his full potential whilst at Upton Park, however, there is little doubting that he has now developed into one of the most talented stars the United States has to offer, one can’t help but wonder how he would have bloomed in the Premier League.
