After the opening day humbling against Liverpool there was some positive news for West Ham United on Monday night.

The Hammers were battered 4-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s title hopefuls on Sunday.

Defeat dampened spirits among supporters excited by a new era under Manuel Pellegrini.

West Ham spent £100 million on 10 new signings over the summer.

But Sunday’s defeat did nothing to suggest there would be any quick fix to a side that has flirted with relegation for the last two seasons.

There was a glimmer of hope for West Ham on Monday night, though.

Every cloud has a Silva lining

And it came from the lowest profile of all the club’s summer captures, Xande Silva.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino took his seat in the stands to watch Spurs’ Under 23s take on their West Ham counterparts.

And when Spurs took the lead it was no great shock.

However, this was no rollover.

Up stepped Portugal Under 21 international Silva, signed for an undisclosed fee from Vitoria de Guimaraes, with a superb six minute hat-trick as West Ham Under 23s won 3-1.

Pochettino, Cousillas and Husillos watch on

Pochettino was pictured chatting to West Ham assistant boss Ruben Cousillas in the stands and Hammers director of football Mario Husillos was also spotted in the crowd.

There was no sign of Manuel Pellegrini but it was Silva dominating the conversation after the game as West Ham fans reacted on Twitter.

And it is fair to say a number of fans want to see the youngster drafted into the first team squad.

‘Give him £100k per week and Andy Carroll’s spot in the first team’

Here are a selection of tweets from fans on his performance:
