West Ham new boy Lucas Perez has been generally viewed as a good value signing for the Londoners ahead of the new season, but there’s stat floating around which should get Hammers fans very excited indeed.
The Spaniard completed his £5 million move to the London Stadium on Thursday as reported by Goal, and put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the club.
It comes after the forward endured a torrid time at Arsenal, where he failed to earn the trust of Arsene Wenger following his 2016 move from Deportivo La Coruna.
He’ll now be looking to make a fresh start under Manuel Pellegrini, and Irons supporters might have reason to be excited about his arrival, because during his loan spell with Deportivo last term, he registered 79 key passes in La Liga (via the club’s official website).
For some context, that tally was second only to Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. It goes to show that Perez can be a hugely creative player, which is something emphasised further by the fact that he has made 51 assists in 235 career appearances – the man isn’t just about scoring goals.
Although he failed to do the business for Arsenal, there’s a high chance he’ll see much more football under Pellegrini, and his vision and creativity could really benefit the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez.
At times last season West Ham found themselves struggling to pick the locks of opposition defences, and there’s definitely need for a creative force to step up this term with Manuel Lanzini sidelined.
