Ahead of West Ham’s trip to Everton last weekend, pundit Stan Collymore laid into Marko Arnautovic.

The former Aston Villa and Liverpool striker used his Sunday Mirror column to take aim at the Austrian talisman over the example he sets for his team-mates.

Collymore said: “Marko Arnautovic is the poster boy for the club and Hammers fans need to ask themselves if he is the kind of player the rest of the dressing room is going to follow. I can tell you now the answer is no – because he sets the worst possible example as a player.

“His old Stoke team-mate Xherdan Shaqiri can afford to have 20 out of 21 erratic games if he pitches up in that last one and scores two worldies because Liverpool aren’t relying on him, he’s not the man.

“But Arnautovic is West Ham’s top man and if I was in the dressing room and a player like that was the focus, I’d be like, “That’s the kind of club I’m at?”

“What Pellegrini needs to do is tear the whole place apart, get grafters in the side who are going to give you a minimum 8/10 week-in, week-out in terms of work rate, rather than fancy dans.

“The aim for Pellegrini is to get the win – and wins – that keep him in the job and then steer West Ham to safety. Then he needs to get rid of players like Arnautovic and build a proper spine before adding the players around the periphery.”

Quite the response

First of all, Arnie did his talking on the pitch. He was inspired as the focal point of by far West Ham’s best result of the season.

Arnie picked up a goal and an assist, but he was also a menace all afternoon. He battled, he ran the channels and was very much part of a strong team performance.

Then the club’s official Twitter account tweeted a video of Arnautovic chasing back with Lucas Digne to ensure Everton did not start a breakaway.

Hammers fans jumped on it straight away, to point out to Collymore that he was wrong. The former England man admitted it himself after the match, naming him in his team of the week.

But that didn’t stop Irons fans piling in on Twitter. We’ve picked out some of the best…
