West Ham need a new central midfielder in January and have reportedly sounded out a deal for Chelsea starlet Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
According to The Mirror, West Ham have been alerted to Loftus-Cheek’s lack of game time and want to take him on loan.
But the same report claims that Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has blocked West Ham’s approach.
Central midfield problems
West Ham are light in central midfield, which is where Loftus-Cheek would operate.
With Jack Wilshere, Manuel Lanzini, Carlos Sanchez injured, West Ham have few options in central midfield.
Pedro Obiang has also suffered with injuries and Mark Noble picked up a three-game suspension, leaving Declan Rice as the only consistent member of the Hammers’ central midfield trio.
Strengthening in the middle of the park has become a priority for West Ham this January.
Loftus-Cheek would be the ideal signing for West Ham in January. He would be a short-term solution in central midfield.
Boasting power, pace, dribbling ability and an eye for goal, Loftus-Cheek is the complete midfielder.
His recent hat-trick in the Europa League clash with BATE Borisov was a timely reminder of just how talented this young man is.
Although he is far from the finished article, spending time on loan at West Ham would surely be more beneficial for him than wasting away on Chelsea’s bench.
The arrivals of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, coupled with the emergence of Ross Barkley, have forced Loftus-Cheek down the pecking order.
Manuel Pellegrini must keep trying to sign the 9-cap England international on loan.
Loftus-Cheek has lost his place in the England squad and he will be keen to wrestle that back.
But having only made three appearances in the Premier League, the 22-year-old might need to move away from Chelsea on loan to catch Gareth Southgate’s eye again.
Could this be enough to encourage Pellegrini to launch another loan bid for the towering 6ft 3in midfielder?
