West Ham are among the clubs being linked with Genk striker Mbwana Samatta.
A number of Premier League sides are said to be tracking Samatta, who has enjoyed a prolific start to the season with Genk.
Although signing a player from the Belgian league represents a risk, this could be a gamble worth taking at the right price.
The news story
Samatta has been in red hot form for Genk this season and that has alerted some Premier League sides.
West Ham, Everton, Brighton and Burnley all hold an interest in the in-form attacker, according to the print edition of the Daily Mirror via HITC Sport.
The 25-year-old moved to Genk in 2016 after impressing for Congolese side TP Mazembe. While at his previous club, he won the African Player of the Year award for those based in the continent.
This season has yielded his best return since moving to Europe.
The Tanzania international, who has 16 goals in 44 caps, has scored 14 times in just 16 games. This includes seven Europa League goals for Genk this term.
West Ham’s striker situation
Marko Arnautovic is currently West Ham’s first-choice striker. And rightly so, given that he has four goals already this season.
But the Austrian’s back-up choices have struggled with injury. Andy Carroll has not played at all this season, while Javier Hernandez has missed the last several games with illness.
This has left West Ham having to use Michail Antonio and Lucas Perez up front.
Signing Samatta would at least provide the Hammers with another centre-forward to pick if there are injuries.
Can Samatta adapt to English football?
It is always a risk buying from the Belgian league, because the style of play is so different.
He has scored goals in Belgium but the standard of opposition is much better in England and he will need to fitter, stronger, quicker and sharper.
This move would be entirely dependent on price, of course, and with a contract until 2020 at Genk, he may not come cheap.
But if West Ham could sort out a cut-price move for Samatta, it might be a gamble worth taking.
The 5ft 11in striker is a better option than Antonio up front. And with Arnautovic carrying a knee knock, Carroll always injury prone and Hernandez getting older, Samatta could be worth a punt.
