West Ham United legend Alvin Martin has called on co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold to do the right thing by young star Declan Rice.

Survival did not mask what was a disappointing season for the Hammers last term but the emergence of young star Rice was a rare highlight.

The 19-year-old started his career at Chelsea and his form since breaking into the West Ham first team last season has seen clubs of a similar ilk mentioned as possible future destinations for the Ireland international.

Rice’s future is in limbo with reports he has rejected the offer of a new contract according to The Times.

Reports claim the 19-year-old currently earns around £3,000 a week despite making 31 senior appearances last season, including 26 in the Premier League, and also his senior international debut for the Republic of Ireland.

Despite spending nearly £100 million on seven new signings for Manuel Pellegrini this summer co-owners Sullivan and Gold are yet to offer Rice a satisfactory deal.

Fans are exasperated at the situation and feel they risk losing the versatile star who can operate in central midfield and across the back four.

Now West Ham legend Alvin Martin has spoken out on Twitter telling Sullivan and Gold they need to pay Rice his worth regardless of the fact he graduated from the club’s academy.

“Club really need to secure Declan Rice,” Martin said on Twitter.

“(He) has the potential to be every bit as good as England’s present central defenders (who were brilliant at World Cup) with focus and hard work.

“A player’s value is this moment! Not what he’s on or what you paid for him or if he has graduated from your academy.”
